Partly due to military requirements, the late 1930's and 1940's were an important period for the development of technically advanced chronographs. As a mid-sized watch manufacturer Gallet & Co. was a specialist, focusing on creating chronographs of superior quality. Her Majesty put Britain's timing needs during World War I into the hands of the company's wristwatches, selecting them as its first chronograph supplier in 1916.
Building on the success of their wartime timepieces, the Swiss firm grew into a significant supplier to the world's armed forces.
Of the many watches produced by Gallet in last 120 years, the MultiChron chronographs are arguably the most historically important and collectible today.
This full size MultiChron measures 36mm in diameter without the crown, the same size as a Rolex Datejust, although we feel like its large dial makes it wear a bit larger.
Powering it is its Excelsior Park caliber EP4 movement.
It is all-original down to the dial, all hands, pushers, and even the winding crown and is in beautiful condition.
Its case shows hardly any previous signs of polishing. The lug chamfers are crisp. It presents as close to mint.
Its military style luminous dial is original and untouched, in excellent condition with only fairly light aging and toning.
Its fine EP for Gallet movement works perfectly and crisply resets to exact zero. It has tarnish to the plates as is typical of Gallet chronograph movements. It is a very honest watch that gives off a true vintage vibe.
One of our Master Watchmaker has fully serviced the watch which consists of fully disassembling the movement, carefully inspecting each part, reassembling and lubricating the movement, and extensive timing testing and regulation (an $895 value). It is running extremely strong and true, keeping time essentially on par with a new chronograph.
